About Ohakune
Although Ohakune is a ski town in winter, it is still a wonderful place to visit in the other seasons. Some popular activities in the area include:
Fishing - This area has some of New Zealand's best trout fishing
Hiking - The two most famous hikes in the area include the Tongariro Crossing and Round Ruapehu Hikes
Golf - The Chateau has a golf course
Cafe and Restaurants - There are many fine cafes and restaurants to keep people caffinated and feed
Relaxing - Ohakune is a wonderful place to get away as the pace of life is slower here
Mountain Biking - There are some great mountain bike tracks around
Like all ski towns there are times when the mountain is shut, generally because it is snowing, when this happens it is a good idea to have some alternative activities planned like:
Movies - Ohakune has a movie theatre in town
Hot pools - The Powder Keg just up the road has some hot pools however if you have a couple of hours to spare Tokaanu has some much nicer hot pools
Rock Climbing - At National Park there is a rock climbing wall which is a fantastic bad weather activity to help kids burn off some energy, click here to go to their website.
Cards and games - The bad weather classic, we do have some cards and games at The Barn however I would encourage you to bring your own.
Paintball - At Erua Lodge they have paint ball as another great activity to help the kids burn off some energy.
